What is Ehrlichia?
Ehrlichia is a small round bacteria, transmitted from insects and animal reservoirs, that can cause the disease ehrlichiosis. The most commonly recognized strain of Ehrlichia is Ehrlichia chaffeensis. Ehrlichia is commonly transmitted through tick bites, which makes it a possible Lyme co-infection. It is also possible to be exposed to Ehrlichia through blood transfusions and organ transplants.
Symptoms of Ehrlichia:
Acute Ehrlichia Infection Symptoms:
- Fever
- Chills
- Flu-like symptoms
- Headache
- Confusion
- Muscle aches
- Skin rash
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Chronic Ehrlichia Infection Symptoms:
- Chronic fatigue
- Brain fog / memory loss
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Joint swelling
- Muscle / joint pain
- Nerve pain
- Headaches / migraines
- Dizziness / lightheadedness
- Tremors
- Constipation
- Skin rash
- Anemia
- Recurrent fevers
Testing for Ehrlichia:
Conventional blood testing for Ehrlichia centers around the species Ehrlichia chaffeensis. The sensitivity of blood PCR testing ranges between 60-85% for this specific strain. This means that it catches Ehrlichia chaffeensis 60-85% of the time in individuals carrying the infection. The sensitivity for other strains of Ehrlichia is unknown. Since Ehrlichia can be a persistent chronic infection, it does not always show up on laboratory testing. Laboratory results largely depend on the location and activity of the infection.
The other caveat of laboratory testing is the possibility of cross-reactivity with other persistent infections, which would result in false positive testing. Other persistent infections, including Lyme disease, EBV, rickettsia, and anaplasma among others can result in false positives.
Dr. Miranda utilizes Cellular Photonics to test patients for Ehrlichia and other chronic infections. From clinical experience, Dr. Miranda has found testing with Cellular Photonics to be a useful tool to identify infections and other substances in the body that blood testing cannot identify. Chronic Ehrlichia Treatment:
Treatment for chronic Ehrlichia is based upon the state of the infection and the total toxic load in the patient’s body. Ehrlichia is commonly associated with other chronic infections, which have to be treated simultaneously. Dr. Miranda uses alternative therapies to treat chronic infections, including herbs, supplements, diet, and IV therapy / UBI ozone.
Conventional medicine often dismisses chronic persistent infections. Often times when chronic infections are treated through conventional care, prolonged courses of antibiotics are prescribed. The chronic use of antibiotics damages many organ systems in the body, including the microbiome. Typically chronic infections become resistant to prescription antibiotics. Dr. Miranda’s approach is different: chronic infections are treated with alternative therapies specific to each infection.
