Biotoxins refer to toxins produced by living organisms as a self-defense mechanism. Biotoxins are found naturally throughout the environment. Many biotoxins are neurotoxins, which means they are toxic to the nervous system. Biotoxins can be inhaled through airborne particles, ingested through food or water, transmitted through insect bites, or absorbed through the skin. Most people are exposed to low levels of biotoxins throughout their life. The state of the immune system and total toxic load of the body determines how well people process biotoxins.
Sources of Biotoxins:
- Aquatic biotoxins produced by some species of sea algae and plankton. These toxins can contaminate seafood and shellfish (e.g. mussels, scallops, oysters).
- Apitoxin from bee venom
- Endotoxins and exotoxins produced by bacteria
- Mycotoxins produced by mold or fungi
- Parasitic toxins
- Phytotoxins produced by plants: cyanogenic glycosides, furocoumarins, lectins, solanines and chaconine found in nightshade plants, and pyrrolizidine alkaloids.
- Viral toxins
- Zootoxins produced by animals
General Symptoms of Biotoxin Illness:
Biotoxin illness occurs when biotoxins build up within the body after an acute or chronic exposure. Biotoxins are extremely difficult for the body to process and eliminate. Over time, biotoxins affect the normal functions of many systems in the body. Many chronic illnesses, including chronic Lyme disease and mold toxicity, have biotoxins involved in their etiology. Listed below are some of the symptoms related to biotoxin illness:
- Chronic fatigue
- Brain fog
- Autism
- Learning disabilities
- ADD / ADHD
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Numbness / tingling
- Dizziness
- POTs / Dysautonomia
- Seizures
- Tremors
- Nerve pain
- Joint pain
- Abdominal pain
- Liver pain
- Elevated liver enzymes
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Shortness of breath
- Chronic cough
- Asthma
- Chest palpitations
- Arrhythmias
- Raynaud’s Syndrome
- Frequent urination
- Interstitial cystitis
- Changes in menstrual cycle
- Low libido
- Swelling
- Immune system dysfunction
- Chemical sensitivity
- Food sensitivities
- Autoimmune conditions
Please note this is not a comprehensive list. Symptoms are based upon each person’s unique physiology and the biotoxins involved.
Testing for Biotoxins:
Currently, there is no standard comprehensive testing for biotoxins. Certain companies offer specialized urine and blood testing for certain biotoxins, such as mycotoxins and specific bacterial toxins. Restorative Medicine offers patients biotoxin testing during appointments through Cellular Photonics. Read more about Cellular Photonics here.
Biotoxin Detoxification:
Dr. Miranda Hill has years of clinical experience managing biotoxins and the related systemic effects on the body. Depending on the biotoxins involved, Dr. Miranda utilizes a variety of gentle binders and therapies to promote drainage and elimination. When treating biotoxins it is vital to eliminate the source(s) of exposure. Our team at Restorative Medicine works with patients throughout the entire detoxification process. Schedule an appointment here for biotoxin illness assessment and treatment.
